I think I’m lost

A fanfic about an adventurous hobbit and her elf rescuer.
First: A hobbit in trouble

The sun came through the branches and made his blond hair glow like gold. Suddenly, Mentha was embarrassingly aware of her crude, dark hair that went in all directions.

“I don’t think I’ve broken anything,” she said and regretted it as soon as the words had left her lips. Why did she sound so stupid?

The elf still had a worried look on his face as she examinated her carefully.

“I’m glad I got here in time.”

“Me too!” Oh dear, why did she have to sound so desperate?

“You are far from home, hobbit,” he said and sounded curious. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen a hobbit in this part of the forest before.”

She stepped back. He had saved her just to quiz her, before attacking her – just like the others.

“I’m so sorry!” she gasped. “I didn’t realize, I didn’t mean to intrude in your forest, please don’t put an arrow through my leg.”

“Oh, no, no.” He took one of her hands in a comforting way. “My apologies. I didn’t mean to scare you. This is not my forest, nor any other elf. Or any creature for that matter. I put an arrow through that dangerous woman’s leg to save you.”

For the first time Mentha took her time to study his face without hiding it. He looked sincere, worried and kind underneath the calm and fierce elven look. His nose was not a potato like hers, it was pointy and suited him. There was something ancient yet wild about him. Like a giant cat or an eagle, patient, because it knows it got all the time in the world.

“Where am I?” she whispered, not able to raise her voice.

“Right here with me,” he whispered back, his face not changing at all. Was he joking?

“I think I’m lost,” she said with a tiny voice.

“Well, we can’t have that,” he answered and stepped back.

She felt like a bubble had been burst. Why was she suddenly so dizzy?

“Let me help you on your way,” he offered and started walking without waiting for her response.

Blushing like a youngster she followed him away from the path and into the woods.
